COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) – An Orangeburg County man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for shooting and wounding a Drug Enforcement Administration agent last year.

Multiple media outlets reported that 33-year-old Joel Robinson was sentenced Monday after pleading guilty to assaulting a law enforcement officer with a deadly weapon.

Agent Barry Wilson was shot in the arm during a drug raid at Robinson’s house last October. Wilson says Robinson fired at officers without knowing who they were.

Defense attorney Jim Griffin said his client had been using marijuana shortly before the shooting and may not have been fully aware of what was happening.

Defense attorney Dick Harpootlian said Robinson was grateful that he was not shot by officers during the raid.

Federal prosecutors dropped other charges in exchange for the guilty plea.
