GREENVILLE, SC (WSPA) – You hear about some addictions, like alcohol or drugs, quite often.

But there’s another addiction no one wants to talk about – pornography.

Recovering porn addict, Ryan Vickery, says the pursuit of pleasure often leads to pain.

I never really thought of it as a problem.  I thought, this is what men do.”

Looking back, Vickery says his addiction was spiraling out of control.

He says the time online destroys families, warps people’s concepts of intimacy, and sometimes causes couples to lose attraction for one another.

“I was no longer interested in my wife and that’s a huge red flag,” Vickery said.

He worked on breaking the habit and later started PornAddicts Anonymous is downtown Greenville.

It’s a place for men and women to get support every week.

“I was always wrestling with it on my own and by myself, in secret.  I had this kind of secret life,” said one member who asked 7News to hide his identity.

Both men believe the addiction can escalate, with some people gradually turning to videos with violence or children.

“The material becomes more explicit.  It’s very, very common for it to progress that way,” said Vickery.

Vickery admits it’s uncomfortable to come forward and share his story.  He says he puts the embarrassment aside to help others.

“If I need to humiliate myself, to help that next person – that’s what I’m willing to do,” he said. The support group meets every Friday night in downtown Greenville, from 6:30-7:30 pm.PornAddicts Anonymous is held at Triune Mercy Center, in the Ezekiel room.
