PICKENS Co. S.C. (WSPA) — Deputies say one inmate has died after they were shot by a homeowner and another inmate has been captured following an escape from the Pickens County jail.

The Pickens County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that deputies are investigating the escape.

Deputies say the inmates escaped the County Prison around 2:40 a.m. Tuesday after assaulting and taking two detention center officers captive.

“One of the two inmates has been captured and is in custody at the Pickens County Detention Center. The second escapee is deceased after having been shot by a local resident in the community a short distance from the prison facility,” according to the news release.

The inmates’ names were not immediately released.

Sheriff Rick Clark is scheduled to hold a news conference on Tuesday.

This is a developing story.
