PELZER, S.C. (WSPA) – An inmate has been recaptured after attempting to escape from Perry Correctional Institution in Greenville on Sunday.

Greenville County Sheriffs responded to an escaped inmate call around 12 p.m., according to dispatch officials.

A perimeter was set up that included road closures on Reedy Fork Road. The roadway has since reopened.

David Rollings Cauthen, who is serving a life sentence for murder, was missing from his cell Sunday morning, according to a news release from South Carolina Department of Corrections.

Institution security found Cauthen hiding under a storage container for construction materials on the institution’s grounds.

According to SCDC online records, Cauthen attempted to escape in July 2018 and was involved in an “other escape related” incident in 2016.

SLED, Greenville County Sheriffs and institution security worked in conjunction with SCDC Police Services on the case.
