Man set fires to cover shoplifting at a Walmart in the upstate, police say

TRAVELERS REST, S.C. (WSPA) – Travelers Rest Police Department officials said a man set two fires at a business early Wednesday morning as a cover for shoplifting.

According to Police Chief Ben Ford, a man went into Walmart, located on 9 Benton Road, at around 4:45 a.m. and set two fires.

Ford said the fires were used as a distraction while the man used a cart to steal things.

According to Ford, the man set fire to a set of rugs and clothes.

After the incident, the man left the area in a red car. 

Damage was reported at the store, but no injuries were reported.

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division agents are assisting the police department in their investigation.

Anyone with information in regards to the incident is asked to call the Travelers Rest Police Department.
