RICHLAND COUNTY, SC (WSPA) – Richland County Coroner’s Office officials welcomed a new, four-legged, member to their family recently.

In a news release, the coroner’s office introduced Kona, a black Labrador retriever, who is the first nationally certified cadaver dog.

Kona will be working exclusively with the coroner’s office and is one of only a few certified cadaver dogs in the country.

Coroner Gary Watts said in the release that Kona is ready to take to the streets following her training and graduation from Highland Canine Training, located in Harmony, NC.

Kona will team up with Deputy Coroner Kristen Bell, who said she and her new partner have already bonded and said she is excited to work with Kona.

According to the release, Kona was sworn in by Richland County Clerk of Court Jeanette McBride.
