COLUMBIA, SC (WCBD) – There is a renewed push to keep minors out of tanning beds in South Carolina

The South Carolina Teen Skin Cancer Prevention Act would impose fines on salons, spas or gyms that allow minors to use tanning equipment.

Right now, anyone under the age of 18 can use a tanning bed if they have permission from a parent or guardian.

“If a product is labeled with parental consent we typically think that that’s safe. We know that’s not the case with tanning,” said Beth Johnson with the American Cancer Society.

Opponents say the bill would be bad for business, especially at small, locally owned tanning shops and spas.

The House bill is expected to appear on the floor for debate sometime soon.

22 other states already passed similar legislation.
