SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA/WCBD) – A man has been shot during an encounter with Spartanburg County deputies Friday night.
Deputies say the shooting happened at a residence just after 10:30 p.m.
Authorities responded to the residence after a neighbor called saying they could see a woman being assaulted.
When deputies arrived Upon, they spotted a man, identified as Jimmy Whiteside (63), armed with a machete and hammer, and a woman with visible injuries.
Deputies ordered Whiteside many times to drop the weapons, but he refused which resulted in one of the deputies shooting the man.

The encounter resulted in Whiteside being shot by a deputy – he was taken to an area hospital where he died.
The woman was also taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
This is the 8th officer-involved shooting in the state so far this year, according to SLED.
An investigation by SLED is underway.
