(WSPA) – The S.C. Highway Patrol says troopers will be cracking down on seat belt violations and speeders in an effort to save lives.

”If you’re in the habit of not wearing your seat belt or if you have a heavy foot, don’t be surprised if you look up in the rearview mirror and see one of us,” Trooper Joe Hovis said.

More than 2,000 people have died in South Carolina traffic accidents in the last two years.

So far this year, 18 people have perished in Spartanburg County. Only two victims were wearing seat belts.

Hovis said there’s an “epidemic” of people not wearing seat belts.

He said people have an 88 percent chance of surviving a crash if strapped in.

Troopers are also working with local authorities to stop speeders across the state.

Hovis said 70 percent of all crashes are speed related.
