SC Vietnam veteran is suing his HOA over American flag display

South Carolina News

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WCBD) – A Vietnam veteran is suing his homeowner’s association because he says they did not let him fly an American flag on a pole in front of his North Myrtle Beach home.

Veteran Robert Huey says before buying the lot and his home, they researched HOA rules and never found anything preventing him from flying an American flag.

“We specifically looked for the words like flag pole and flag,” he said. “The words are not in there anywhere. So, there’s no restriction on flag poles.”

The lawsuit says the main reason the HOA refused Huey’s request is that, in most cases, “the flag constitutes a sign” and “signs are prohibited.”
