Shaw Air Force Base announces death of missing senior airman

SUMTER, S.C. (WCBD) – Officials at Shaw Air Force Base is reporting a senior airman who was reported missing on May 18th has been found dead.

Jose Llanes, 28, served as a 20th Logistics Readiness Squadron aircraft parts store journeyman and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force Nov. 6, 2012.

Officials say he has been stationed at Shaw Air Force Base since Mar. 7, 2013.

Llanes was reportedly found off Relief Road, which is located west of the Route 379 and I-95 intersection, approximately 20 miles southeast of Shaw on Tuesday around 11:0 a.m.

“This is a heartbreaking day for our squadron family, and for everyone else who knew Jose,” said Lt. Col. Frank Fappiano, 20th LRS Commander. “It makes us want to pull those around us a little bit closer.”

Lt. Col. Fappiano said Jose was a beloved teammate and friend. “His presence in our unit will be sorely missed. Our sincerest condolences go to Jose’s family, friends and everyone else affected by this terrible tragedy.” 

The cause of death is currently unknown. The incident remains under investigation.
