SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV/WCBD) – The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) charged a former Horry County Child Protective Services Investigator for allegedly falsifying a report linked to a child fatality.

Amanda Marie Sutherland, 29, faces a charge of misconduct in office.

According to SLED officials, on April 21 Sutherland was assigned and legally obligated to investigate a thorough child abuse and child neglect investigation after receiving a report – Sutherland was to investigate within 24 hours of receiving the report.

14 days after receiving the report, on May 5, one of the children in the report died.

Investigators say after the child’s death, Sutherland allegedly falsified a report claiming to have investigated allegations of child abuse and child neglect when she had not.

Sutherland stated in her alleged document that she conducted a home visit with the mother and children of the alleged report – In addition, Sutherland implemented facts and notes about the family from an electronic case file to make the false documentation appear legitimate.

The child’s death occurred in May and was investigated by SLED and the Conway Police Department.

Currently, Sutherland is booked at the J. Reuben Long Detention Center.
