State, local agencies to participate in annual hurricane lane reversal drill

South Carolina News

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) Commuters may see a heavy law enforcement presence on I-26 Thursday.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety, in conjunction with several state and local agencies, will conduct a hurricane evacuation exercise on Thursday to test lane reversal plans for all three major coastal areas of the state.

Law enforcement personnel and traffic control devices will be deployed on I-26 from the intersection of I-526 and I-26 in Charleston to I-26 and I-77 in Columbia.

Lanes will not actually be reversed as a part of the exercise. The exercise should not interfere with the flow of traffic, intersections will not be blocked, and motorists will be allowed to move freely.

Motorists are urged to use extreme caution when driving through these areas.

The exercise will last from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.
