BOILING SPRINGS, S.C. (WSPA) – A house was destroyed after lightning sparked a fire early Thursday morning in Boiling Springs.

According to the Boiling Springs Fire Department, the call came in at 2:02 a.m. in reference to a house fire in the 100 block of Bridgeville Way in the Glenlake Subdivision.

“The roof was completely gone and the house was well engulfed with fire,” said Assistant Chief Tony Barnett, Boiling Springs Fire Department.

On the scene, neighbors told 7NEWS that flames filled the sky as crews fought the fire. They recalled something unusual waking them out of their sleep that night.

“All of a sudden it was just like a big bomb went off. It shook my house and I know it shook the other three houses here too. It was just unbelievable. I couldn’t absorb what happened,” said Kim Kanney.

According to the Boiling Springs Assistant Fire Chief, multiple eyewitnesses told investigators they saw a flash of light and heard a loud noise.

“Today we are following up and assisting the insurance investigator to confirm our original suspicions of the cause of the fire,” said Barnett.

Investigators later confirmed that a lightning bolt struck the house. On Friday, the home was deemed a total loss as the Assistant Fire Chief and investigators surveyed the damage.

“We’ve had approximately three or four structure fires in the past year that were caused by lightning strikes. It’s more common than people realize,” said Barnett. “The good thing about it is we have a way to quantify whether or not if those were lightning strikes to the structure.”

As the ash was swept away on Friday, neighbors counted their blessings.

“I have just seen stuff like this on TV, but not live with my own eyes,” said Kanney. “I thank God that it wasn’t my house and you know, I hate it for them people there.”

According to the Boiling Springs Fire Department, two people were inside the home when the fire sparked. They both managed to escape unharmed.

According to officials, the Red Cross is assisting the couple.
