State senators were back at the State House; but why?

Senators back in chambers-846624087

South Carolina lawmakers were back at the State House to finish some last minute business. The last time state senators were at the State House was 3 months ago to put final touches on the budget.

On the agenda for lawmakers Tuesday was a tax conformity bill aimed at putting more money in taxpayers’ pockets come tax season.

In late 2017, early 2018 federal tax changes gave some breaks to corporations.

So South Carolina senators reworked legislation to match the changes on the state level for individuals and families.

Senator Thomas Alexander from Oconee County explained some of the changes.

“But for our families and individuals they increased the standard deduction for individuals to $12k, $18k for head of household, and $24k for husband and wife filing jointly. So we are consistent under this legislation that we’re picking up those same numbers.”

Senators are hoping to have all the needed forms in place for the 2019 tax season.
