Suspect charged in South Carolina university encounter

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — A 26-year-old man is facing charges in connection with an encounter at Allen University in Columbia that led a campus officer to open fire, authorities said Saturday.

Ja’Cori Ochun Brown is charged with carrying or displaying firearms in public buildings or an adjacent area and pointing and presenting firearms at a person, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division said.

Brown “did point and or present a loaded firearm” at Allen University Officer Matthew Clark on Friday, and Clark shot at him, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

The affidavit did not include additional details. Brown was booked at the Richland County Detention Center, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division spokesman Tommy Crosby said. He did not know whether Brown had an attorney.

Crosby said the officer and Brown both suffered injuries that were not considered life threatening.

The officer was injured attempting to jump over a fence while chasing the suspect, Allen University spokeswoman Anika Cobb told WIS-TV News. The station said no one suffered a gunshot wound, and the suspect was not a student.
