Teenager dead following shooting in N. Charleston Olive Garden parking lot


NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCBD) — Authorities are investigating following a deadly shooting at Olive Garden on Northwoods Boulevard.

North Charleston Police say the incident happened on Friday, March 18 at 6:30 p.m.

We’re told when officers arrived on scene, they found Derrick Roper, 15, of North Charleston, who was a passenger in a car, with a gunshot wound to his upper left shoulder. Medics transported him to the Medical University of South Carolina where he later died.

Investigators say it is believed that Roper and suspects met at the location to conduct a drug transaction.

Calvin Benekin, 22, of North Charleston, was arrested and charged murder in connection to the shooting. Authorities are still searching for Jamal Shawntee Drayton, 22, of Summerville.

Police also arrested Deshone Bernard Rivers, 19, of Charleston, Tyler Linwood White, 22, of North Charleston, and Brittney Tiara Wall, 23, of North Charleston. Rivers and Wall are charged with conspiracy to violate the South Carolina narcotics laws while White is charged with possession with intent to distribute marijuana. Investigators believed they were all involved with coordinating and/or participating in the arrangement of the drug transaction.

White had $2,068.25 in his front pants pockets. He also had approximately 35 grams of marijuana and two digital scales in his possession. There was also a prescription bottle found in White’s boxers containing 39 Xanax bars and 6 smaller pieces.
