SANTEE, SC (WCBD) — A teenager is in custody after robbing a grocery store, 300 feet from his home, in Orangeburg County.

Authorities say Trevell Garner, 19, of Santee, is charged with strong arm robbery.

We’re told the incident happened at the Mallard’s Grocery Store on Jack Branch Road on Thursday, March 10.

“Our investigators arrived within minutes of the initial call,” Orangeburg County Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said. “Within the hour, the suspect was in custody.”

Investigators say a clerk called 911 saying that a regular customer came into the store demanding money from the register. Rather than give the man money, the clerk told the suspect to get it himself as she attempted to leave, according to a news release. Authorities say the suspect then hit the clerk in the head and pulled her back into the store where he ordered her to the floor.

Only a “few dollars” were taken from the register. A concerned citizen told investigators the suspect was traveling by bicycle on Mt. Olive Road, about a mile away from the store. He was taken into custody without incident.

Bond was denied at a hearing on Friday, March 11.
