College students impacted by Hurricane Florence in South Carolina could benefit from grants given to their schools by the U.S.. Department of Education.

Secretary Betsy DeVos announced those grants last week, adding almost $2 million in similar relief for students in North Carolina.

The College of Charleston is getting the second highest amount in the state. The school gets $140,505. The Department of Education says the money comes from returned Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants.

“The Department will continue to do all that it can to assist students, faculty and institutions in the Carolinas as they work to recover from this disaster,” DeVos said in a statement.

Seven Charleston County institutions will receive a total of more than $280,000.

Horry Georgetown Commission for Technical Education, which serves some of the hardest hit areas of our state received $214,536.

According to a press release, the schools have flexibility in how that money is used. However, they are required to award program money first to students with exceptional financial need with priority going to students on Pell Grants.
