GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) – South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley has declared a state of emergency in Pickens and Greenville counties because of a growing wildfire in the mountains.

The declaration Tuesday allows the governor to request help from the South Carolina National Guard and the State Guard.

The wildfire has burned more than 9 square miles on Pinnacle Mountain. Officials say it started about two weeks ago and is just over a third contained.

The South Carolina Forestry Commission says 250 firefighters are fighting the blaze and 60 more are trying to clear out dead leaves and branches in front of the fire to try and stop it from spreading.

The area is in an exceptional drought and there is only a slight chance of rain through the Thanksgiving weekend.
