2018 Governor’s race in South Carolina is most expensive contest in the state’s history

COLUMBIA, SC (WCBD, AP) – The numbers are in — as the midterms quickly approach, according to reports, the 2018 governor’s race in South Carolina is the most expensive contest in history. 

Candidates have raised more than $20-million dollars in this year’s gubernatorial campaign. Including the primary season, this race surpasses the more than $17-million dollar total for the 2010 cycle. 

From July to October, Republican Governor Henry McMaster raised more than $1.6-million dollars and has more than $600-thousand left to spend in the campaign’s closing weeks.

Over the same period. Democratic candidate James Smith has raised $1.4-million dollars and has more than $300-thousand dollars left to spend for the remainder of the campaign.

The general election is Nov. 6. Absentee voting is now open state-wide.
