COLUMBIA, SC (WCBD) – Incumbent Henry McMaster will stay in the Governor’s mansion after defeating Democrat James Smith on Tuesday.
McMaster picked-up 54% of the vote with 99 percent of the precincts reporting.
After serving the last two years of Nikki Haley’s term, he will now have 4 more years as Governor.
News 2 was at McMaster’s campaign watch-party in Columbia Tuesday night where an energy-filled crowd chanted in favor of McMaster ahead of his victory speech.
McMaster told supporters to get ready for an even better and stronger South Carolina.
“We’re going to build a prosperity unlike any we have ever seen before,” he said along his wife. “That is my promise to you, that is our promise to you!”
However, notably missing from McMaster’s victory speech was any mention of President Trump. Trump came to the Palmetto State to campaign for McMaster earlier this year.

Democratic candidate James Smith also addressed his supporters Tuesday night as it became clear McMaster had won the election.
He appeared on stage with his family, running-mate Mandy Powers Norrell, and some fellow veterans.
“We have to do this. All of us have to do this. We have to do everything to make SC better than we found it,” he said. “We made great strides and raised issues that are so important. We’ll continue over the next four years. God bless America.. God bless South Carolina,” he said.
There is no word on what Smith plans to do next. Fellow Democrat Seth Rose was just elected to replace him in the state House of Representatives.
