Local Sports

The Goose Creek Lady Gators are the class 5A basketball state champions.

They beat defending champions Spring Valley in a 4th quarter comeback victory Friday night in Columbia.

Goose Creek trailed the entire game, but in the fourth the team felt a change in momentum and knew they were still in the game. That feeling and their performance pushed them to their 3rd state title since 2010.

Senior Mary Davis his the free throws that sealed the deal.

After the win the celebration continued into Monday. Goose Creek High School held a pep rally and net cutting ceremony to honor the state champions.

Head coach Tim Baldwin and the team were excited for the entire Goose Creek community, and their phones were blowing up after Friday’s win.

The Bishop England girls basketball team are also champion. The Battling Bishops beat Keenan on Saturday afternoon to claim the 3A state championship.
