Berkeley Co. leaders continue to prepare for the potential impacts Hurricane Florence

MONCKS CORNER, S.C.- (Tuesday, September 11)- Berkeley County leaders continue to prepare for the potential impacts Hurricane Florence could have on South Carolina.

Berkeley County Emergency Operations Center moved to OPCON 1 at 12 p.m. Tuesday, September 11, according to the news release. 

OPCON 1 means a disaster or emergency situation is in effect, full-fledged emergency response operations are on-going. Berkeley County is in the highest state of emergency operations, officials added

Officials stated that the Berkeley County Council issued a State of Emergency declaration at the County council meeting Monday evening. 

Berkeley County Government offices are closed until further notice. 

In coordination with the evacuation, the following shelters opened. Additional shelters may open if needed. 

Those who stay in shelters are responsible for their bedding, food, water, and any other necessities they may have. There is a special needs shelter in Berkeley County. If you require a special needs shelter, please call DHEC at 1-800-578-2031.

  •  Berkeley Middle School
  •  Cane Bay High School- This a pet-friendly location. Citizens must stay with their pets during their time at the shelter. Pet owners are NOT allowed to drop-off their pets at the shelters. 
  • Goose Creek High School- Berkeley County citizens are welcome at this shelter. This is the primary location for Charleston residents. 
  •  St. Stephen Elementary
